2013
October
We visit a number of houses again. The very last house gives us the ‘waw’ feeling again. What a view, what a region and what a dump! Everyone declares us crazy.

A rough diamond
Our story begins in April 2013 when, in a crazy mood, we visit 20 houses with our mobile home in the southernmost part of Spain. Nothing charmed us and we almost gave up, until we reached the last house. This one gave us the ‘waw’ feeling we were looking for. This is the Alpujaras, a wonderful, rough and authentic region.
It feels right, but after a number of visits it turns out to be a bit too remote. Without electricity and cell phone coverage, it’s not the paradise we were hoping for.
Moreover, the Spanish administration is not really helpful either and so we give up on our project with pain in our hearts.

This region appeals to us
The decision is made. It is ‘our’ cortijo. The deal is done.
Let the adventure begin!
The renovation begins. A fantastic team of 4 men take off the roof and demolish a few walls. The garage and the barn are taken down.
We go back and forth like madmen to arrange everything, negotiate with the contractor and place orders.

From reservoir to pool
The house is starting to take shape again.
The swimming pool is also being taken care of. What has been a water reservoir so far now has beautiful mosaic tiles and a large terrace.
Painting and decoration is being done, bathrooms and bedrooms are installed.

Except for a few finishes, the house is completely finished.
This will be our first real holiday with the family. The first visitors are also expected. Exciting and relaxing at the same time.

You can still enjoy a true starry sky from one of our many terraces.
